Sustainable tourism - THE NOMINEES

The Italian mountain hiking path of the CAI – CLUB ALPINO ITALIANO

Revision, recovery and relaunching of the hiking pathway of the Sentiero Italia linking all the regions of Italy along its more than 7000 km, to enhance the allure, beauty and traditions of their internal territories.

The Sentiero Italia goes along the entire ridge of the Apennines, including the islands, and continues along the southern  side of the Alps. Conceived in 1983 by a group of hiking enthusiast journalists, who subsequently formed the Associazione Sentiero Italia, the route was worked out by the CAI itself in 1990. With the invaluable help of the members of its branches, who worked out in detail the route, the stages and the wayside signs, the Sentiero Italia was inaugurated in 1995.

The chain of pathways forming the Sentiero Italia is now almost entirely marked with the CAI white and red stripes and the initials “S.I.”.
