Lagazuoi Winning Ideas Mountain Awards: the mountains are the 'promised land' of innovation

Visionary projects, ideas about the future, new-generation materials, and stories put the spotlight on the great potential of the mountains. The original project conceived by Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti aims to bring to the forefront the talents and ideas of tomorrow. The projects, selected by teams of experts and evaluated by four thematic juries, will be exhibited to the public from 21st February to 7th April at Lagazuoi Expo Dolomiti, the exhibition centre at an altitude of 2,732 metres.

"It is time to emancipate ourselves from a passivist and traditional vision of the mountains. We are focused on the future". The entrepreneur and creator of Lagazuoi Expo Dolomiti, Stefano Illing, presents the Lagazuoi Winning Ideas Mountain Awards, a competition that showcases and valorises high-tech, design and innovation linked to the peaks. "The mountains have their own values, they are not a white screen on which to project needs that belong to the city or the plain. The valorisation of the mountain regions occurs through innovation combined with sustainability.

Hence innovative materials, ingenious solutions, and small and large digital revolutions. But also proposals for different tourism, capable of rediscovering the values and the slow rhythm that mountains impose, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by Green Innovation Sustainability.

The selected projects will be exhibited from 21st February to 7th April in a unique setting at an altitude of 2.746 metres, Lagazuoi Expo Dolomiti, with a view of the most beautiful Dolomite peaks.

There are 4 categories in the competition. For each category, a team of experts has identified the best Italian and international proposals.
Four juries were selected to determine the winners of each category. These juries were made up of university students from specific areas of expertise and evaluated the selected projects under the supervision of a reference professor.

The ‘Mountain tourism and sustainability’ category  is aimed at a new kind of tourist who is environmentally conscious and decides the details of his holiday by himself,  avoiding pre-packaged vacations. The candidates were proposed by a team composed of Sebastiano Venneri, member of the National Secretariat of Legambiente, responsible for the tourism sector; Daniela Berta, director of the Museo Nazionale della Montagna “Duca degli Abruzzi" of Turin; Maria Corvi, a journalist of the daily newspaper La Stampa. The jury will be made up of Master students of Università della Montagna (a centre of excellence of the University of Milan at Edolo), coordinated by Prof. Anna Giorgi, director of the Departmental Centre of Applied Studies for the Sustainable Management and Safeguarding of the Mountains of the Università degli Studi of Milan.

The "Mountain Clothing and Equipment" category brings together the best proposals for technical clothing and equipment suitable for particular altitudes and climatic conditions, the result of extensive research and testing. The candidates will be selected by Andrea Bianchi, the creator of Mountainblog.it; Marco Di Marco, director of Sciare; Luca Castaldini, a journalist at SportWeek, a sporting weekly that comes with La Gazzetta dello Sport. The members of the jury will be young designers of the L.UN.A. University, guided by Prof. Dario Apollonio, President of the  Libera Università delle Arti di Bologna (the free arts university of Bologna).

Unmissable is the "Digital Innovation & Apps" category, dedicated to the "digital revolution", ideas for renewing the mountain experience. Ideas which enable people to discover the mountains in a different way in terms of sport or tourism, safety or geolocation. The selection team is made up of Jacopo Pertile, Licensee manager of TEDxCortina,  Eduard Martinelli, Director of the Italian association of cableway operators ANEF; Emiliano Audisio, curator and event manager of Wired. This jury is made up of university students of the Ski Club of the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, co-ordinated by the lecturer of the Department of Finance, Prof. Federico Pippo

And finally, the category dedicated to 'Mountain Short Films'. A selection of short videos recounts the mountains from multiple points of view. Images and words, filtered by the filmmaker's sensitivity, deconstruct and reconstruct the imaginary associated with the highlands and provide a new key to understanding. The selection was entrusted to Laura Agnoletto, co-founder and art director of Milano Montagna Festival; Luca Bich, art director of Cervino Cine Mountain Festival; Marco Ribetti, vice director of the Museo Nazionale della Montagna of Turin and curator of its Cineteca Storica e Videoteca (Historical Film Library and Video Archive); Luana Bisesti, director of the Trento Film Festival. Members of the jury will be the students of the Scuola Civica di Cinema Luchino Visconti in Milan, under the supervision of Prof. Germana Bianco, head of the Department of International Relations and Festivals
