Sustainable tourism - THE NOMINEES

Oasi Zegna

The Oasi Zegna is a nature area in the province of Biella. Its roots go back to the 1930s, when the entrepreneur Ermenegildo Zegna, the founder of the Gruppo Zegna, after creating at Trivero (in the Prealps of the Biella region) the company that bears his name, dedicated his time to breathing new life into his birthplace.

In addition to the building of houses for his employees and a health, training, sports and leisure centre for his fellow citizens, the project envisaged the reforestation of the mountain slopes, with 500,000 plants including conifers, rhododendrons and hydrangeas, and the construction of a road,  the "Panoramica Zegna" (to this day called by the same name), to enable the local population and tourists to enjoy the natural environment of the mountains.

The new generations of the Zegna family have taken up the challenge passed down to them, and in 1993 the Oasi Zegna project was completed. The oasis extends over the mountain territory around the first 26 km of the scenic route known as the "Strada Panoramica", for an area of around 100 square kilometres.

The purpose of the Oasi Zegna is to protect and valorise the territory, communicating with its visitors by means of an innovative "visual alphabet" sign system describing the animals, plants and minerals that populate the territory and illustrating local history, providing visitors with better knowledge and hence a positive respect for nature. The partnership of the Zegna family with FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano, the Italian Environmental Foundation) started in 2003; since then, we have been side by side in the creation of many projects. Given our shared  values and vision, we therefore decided to grant our sponsorship to the Oasis, as a far-sighted and creative example of the valorisation of the environment.
