L'ORTO DI OSTANA

Company: Azienda agricola 'L’Orto di Ostana' di Serena Giraudo

L'orto di Ostana is an individual company, a women-run organic farm established in 2016 to recover land that has been abandoned or left uncultivated for decades. The work started with a test phase to determine which crops that grew on the same land a century earlier are suitable for modern, more mechanised cultivation and the current climate, as well as economically sustainable. Subsequently, a processing centre was set up to add value to the farm products, to avoid waste from unsold goods and, given the presence of snow for about 4 months a year, to compensate for the quite short harvesting season. Currently, vegetables, small fruits and legumes are cultivated, as well as traditional crops such as potatoes, rye and buckwheat.
